Chlorine odour in City tap water expected to dissipate over weekend

The City of Swift Current wishes to inform residents that the chlorine odour that has been present in City tap water since the beginning of this week is expected to dissipate over the next 72 hours.

The City constantly monitors our water supply at numerous locations to ensure that it is safe for residents to drink. Though there is a chlorine odour at present, we can assure residents that the water supply continues to be completely safe for drinking and other uses.

Chlorine is a disinfectant that is commonly added to municipal water supplies to help stave off bacteria and viruses that could otherwise be present. During the spring melt, the runoff of raw water into our creek system contains a high amount of ammonia, which can adversely affect chlorine levels. As such, extra chlorine is added to the water supply to account for the ammonia.

A recent release of water into our system from the Duncairn Dam will help to dilute our water supply. This will account for the dissipation of the chlorine odour in the coming days.
