PROVINCIAL-MUNICIPAL HIGHWAY LIGHTING PROJECT COMPLETE IN SWIFT CURRENT

The Province of Saskatchewan, along with the City of Swift Current, would like to announce that their jointly-funded Highway Lighting Project has been completed. The lighting is aimed at improving safety on the Trans-Canada Highway through the community.

The Government of Saskatchewan has contributed more than $600,000 towards the lighting project, which includes 172 lights between Highway 4 (Memorial Drive) and 17th Avenue West. An additional 16 lights have also been installed at the Transport City intersection.

For its part, the City of Swift Current provided the labour and equipment required to complete the project, which took place over approximately ten weeks from late-July through September.

“These lights were installed with safety in mind to enable drivers to have much better sightlines as they pass through the city,” Swift Current MLA, Premier Brad Wall said. “There can be many different vehicles merging from the various service roads, so the additional lighting will provide a safer corridor.”

“We certainly share Premier Wall’s concern with safety,” said Swift Current Mayor Denis Perrault. “That’s why we’re very grateful to our Provincial Government for working with us to create a safer environment for motorists and pedestrians on our Highway Corridor.”

“It is very important for us to remind residents and visitors that there are safe pedestrian crossings located at Central Avenue and at Memorial Drive,” continued Perrault. “Just because there is better lighting in place now, doesn’t mean it’s safe to cross four lanes of highway on foot, day or night.”

These LED streetlights produce 16,000 lumens each for improved illumination, but they are “dark sky friendly”, which means that their light does not cast upwards to create light pollution. 

The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure will continue to consider additional safety improvements to help reduce the number of pedestrian incidents.
